# Write a cover letter from your actual experience

> Connect the role to a few relevant things you have actually done. A useful cover letter explains that connection in clear language, complements the resume, and avoids claims you cannot support.

## Choose the experience that fits the role

Read the job description and identify two or three responsibilities you can discuss from experience. Find the supporting details in your resume or work notes before drafting.

A responsibility you have not held is a gap to understand, not a fact to add to the letter. If the posting asks for a tool you have not used, describe relevant experience honestly rather than implying that you have used it.

## Use a simple structure

Short paragraphs are easier to revise than a single dense block. The structure is a drafting aid, not a required formula for every application.

1. Open with the role you are applying for and a specific reason it interests you.
2. Describe a relevant example from your work. Give enough context to make your contribution clear.
3. Connect another useful part of your experience to the role, without repeating the resume line by line.
4. Close courteously and check the employer name, role title, and contact details.

## An example using a fictional resume

This example connects daily support work with the responsibilities in the posting. The tool, volume, and type of work make the connection specific. Replace these fictional details with your own experience before using a similar structure.

Fictional example — Alex Morgan

```text
In my customer support role at Northstar Software, I answered 40–60 daily customer questions through email and chat using Zendesk. I also helped troubleshoot account issues and updated onboarding guides. That experience is relevant to the support and documentation responsibilities in your posting.
```

## Check it against the resume

- Employers, roles, and dates agree across both documents.
- Numbers can be traced back to a real source.
- The letter names the correct role and company.
- The wording sounds like something you can explain in an interview.
- The exported attachment follows the employer’s instructions.

## Optional help from CVPilot

Choose “Polish the writing too” and add a job description to include a matching cover letter in your preview. The $9 one-time export includes the generated letter when that mode is used. Formatting-only mode does not create a cover letter.

AI suggestions need a final read. Check every factual claim before exporting or submitting your application.

## Common questions

### Does every CVPilot resume include a cover letter?

A matching cover letter is generated when you choose writing improvements and provide a job description. Formatting-only mode preserves your resume text and does not generate a letter.
