# How to format a resume in Google Docs

> Start with complete, accurate resume text. Give each section a clear heading, use consistent spacing, and check the exported file. You can format it yourself in Google Docs or preview an automatically formatted version with CVPilot.

## Start with the words you already have

Before changing fonts, read the resume from top to bottom. Keep each role next to its employer and dates. If you copied from a PDF, check that columns did not mix together and that every contact detail came through.

An attractive layout cannot fix an omitted job title or a wrong phone number. Make those corrections in the source text first. Keep a copy of the original so you can compare it with the finished document.

## A practical manual formatting sequence

Google Docs provides controls for line spacing, paragraph spacing, and keeping paragraphs together. These controls are useful when a heading or job description splits awkwardly.

1. Choose a single body font and apply it consistently. Use a larger size for your name and a clear style for section headings.
2. Use familiar section labels such as Experience, Education, and Skills. Keep each heading close to the text that follows it.
3. Apply one bullet style to work descriptions. Keep role titles, employers, and dates visually distinct from the descriptions.
4. Use paragraph spacing controls to set the gaps between entries. Repeated blank lines make a resume harder to maintain.
5. Review page breaks after the text is final. Then download the requested file format and open that exported file.

## When automatic formatting is useful

CVPilot is useful when you have the resume text and want a consistent document without adjusting every paragraph. Upload a text-based PDF or .docx file, or paste your text. Choose “Just format it” to preserve the wording and order of nonempty lines.

The full preview is free. Exporting one resume costs $9 USD once and includes Google Docs, Word, and PDF. After payment, connect the Google account you want to use; the saved document belongs to that account.

Choose optional writing improvements only if you want the wording edited. Review those suggestions yourself. A supplied job description also enables a matching cover letter in editing mode.

## Choose the approach that fits your starting point

- Already happy with your Google Doc? Adjust the few paragraphs that need attention using the editor you have.
- Starting from a blank page? Draft the content before spending time on layout.
- Have a complete but inconsistent resume? Preview CVPilot’s formatting, then decide whether the finished export is worth $9.
- Need a highly customized graphic layout? CVPilot’s simple, text-led output may not fit that requirement.

## Check the document you will actually send

Open the downloaded file or saved Google Doc. Check contact details, dates, reading order, and the last line on each page. Document editors may wrap text differently, so the browser preview is a starting point for your final check.

Follow the employer’s instructions for the attachment. If they request a Word document, provide that format instead of sending only a Google Docs link.

## Common questions

### Is Google Docs suitable for an editable resume?

It can be a useful place to keep and update resume text. Check the attachment format requested by each employer, and inspect the exported file before submitting it.

### Can CVPilot edit an existing document in my Drive?

The current flow creates a new document from the resume text you upload or paste. It does not edit an existing Google Doc in place.
