How to fix resume spacing in Google Docs

Check paragraph spacing before adding or removing blank lines. Keep the settings consistent for similar entries, then inspect page breaks and the exported document. A short resume with uneven spacing usually needs a few targeted changes.

First, identify what is making the gap

A large empty area can come from blank paragraphs, paragraph spacing, or a forced page break. Deleting random lines may hide the symptom while leaving the underlying setting in place.

Compare the troublesome entry with a nearby entry that looks correct. If only one role has a large gap above it, fix that paragraph before changing spacing across the entire resume.

Set spacing on comparable paragraphs

As an editorial starting point, aim for a body that reads comfortably and a slightly larger gap between roles. There is no single spacing value that fits every font, text length, and page size. Avoid shrinking the text simply to preserve an arbitrary page count.

  1. Select the paragraphs you want to adjust.
  2. Open Format → Line & paragraph spacing in Google Docs.
  3. Choose a consistent line spacing and adjust the space before or after the paragraphs.
  4. Repeat for other entries of the same kind, then inspect the page.

Keep a heading with its content

For a heading that lands alone at the bottom of a page, use the paragraph controls to keep it with the next paragraph. Use Keep lines together when an individual paragraph should stay on one page.

A manual page break is useful when you deliberately want a new page. It is less useful as a patch for inconsistent spacing, because later edits can create new gaps. Google Docs also lets you adjust page and section margins.

Think in entries, not blank lines

Keep bullets within one role together and separate the next role clearly. The pattern should help a reader see where one job ends and the next begins.

Do one final export check

Download the format requested by the employer and open it. Check the first and last lines of every page, not only how the editor looks on your screen.

If the original document is difficult to repair, you can paste the text into CVPilot and preview a new layout. Formatting mode keeps your wording and order; exporting the result costs $9 once.

Common questions

Should I press Enter several times to create space?

Use paragraph spacing for repeatable gaps. Extra blank lines can be useful while drafting, but they make later layout changes harder to control.

Why does my resume look different after export?

Font metrics, page settings, and how an editor renders the file can affect wrapping. Inspect the file you intend to send and adjust it if needed.
