Turn a PDF resume into an editable Google Doc

CVPilot can extract text from a text-based PDF resume and build a new editable document. It recreates the layout from that text; it does not preserve the PDF’s original design. Check the extracted wording and reading order before generating a preview.

Check whether your PDF contains readable text

Try selecting a sentence in your PDF viewer and copying it into a text editor. If readable words appear, you have a useful starting point. If the page behaves like a single image, it may be a scan.

CVPilot’s current PDF importer reads embedded text. It does not perform optical character recognition on scanned images. For an image-only resume, obtain a text version and paste it into the workspace.

From PDF to a new Google Doc

The purchase also includes PDF and editable Word files. The Google Doc is a new file in your own Drive, so it is easy to keep updating after the purchase.

  1. Upload a PDF under 4 MB with no more than 15 pages.
  2. Read the imported text. Fix mixed columns, missing characters, or details that ended up on the wrong line.
  3. Choose “Just format it” to keep the wording and order of that checked text.
  4. Preview the complete formatted resume. Return to the input if anything is missing.
  5. Pay $9 once when you want the exports, then choose Save to Google Docs and connect your Google account.

What carries over—and what needs checking

  • Words: the text you confirm in the workspace is the source for formatting mode.
  • Order: each nonempty input line stays in its original sequence. Check PDF extraction before confirming.
  • Design: original columns, graphics, colors, and exact page geometry are not reproduced. The result uses a consistent text-led layout.
  • Files: the original upload is read to extract text and is not retained by CVPilot. The new preview and purchased document have the retention periods described in the privacy policy.

If you already have a Word file

Upload the .docx version instead of exporting it to PDF first. That avoids an unnecessary conversion step. You can also paste text directly if a file import produces an awkward reading order.

Keep a copy of the original until you have checked every section of the new document. A clean preview is useful only when the information is complete.

Keep an editable version and a submission copy

Use the Google Doc or Word file for future updates. Keep the attachment you send to an employer as a separate version so you can later see exactly what they received.

If the application instructions require an uploaded file, send the requested file format. A shared Google Docs link may not be an accepted substitute.

Common questions

Will the Google Doc look identical to my PDF?

No. CVPilot extracts the text and creates a new layout. It is intended for a clean, editable result, not an exact visual replica of the original PDF.

Can I convert a scanned resume?

The current importer does not read image-only scans. Paste the resume’s text or upload a text-based PDF or .docx file.

Is the conversion free?

The full preview is free. Saving the finished Google Doc and downloading Word or PDF exports costs $9 USD once.
